Chopin. Caribbean Key

2020
Star

It is a story about the Antilian history of Chopin's music and the fate of its creators. The music of the greatest Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin, reached the Caribbean Island of Curaçao in the 19th century. It inspired local musicians to compose the “Caribbean Mazurka”. For many years the piece has been known as the national dance of Curaçao. The music and its variations reflect the tragic history of the island and although the tunes are seemingly distant, they profoundly resemble Chopin's compositions. The film centers on Randal Corsen, the most outstanding local pianist, who plans to write pieces inspired by Chopin, for traditional instruments and in some new arrangements. He is joined by Janusz Olejniczak, an internationally recognised composer, enthusiast and interpreter of Chopin's music. The artists intend to invite contemporary musicians from Curaçao, who have not yet played Chopin, to perform the music together.

In times of crisis we get to find out who we really are. ‘The Troublemaker’ delves deep into the ideas and emotions behind the international wave of civil protest that has emerged in response to the unfolding climate crisis. The pandemic has shown how fast and how far we can move when faced with a global threat. The film asks the simple question: if the science is right on climate change, what should you do? Facing up to crisis, transforming yourself by overcoming a seemingly insurmountable threat, is THE archetypal story of human civilisation. But this time the threat is global and may prove fatal. Now that we understand more about what a ‘global crisis’ feels like, it can no longer be ignored. This is our opportunity to live life without lies, a life that offers both resilience and joy through the power of collective action. thetroublemakermovie.com

Was Sigmund Freud a revolutionary genius who changed our thought and sought to release humanity from shackles of oppression, religion and hypocrisy? Or was he a greedy and devious charlatan who swindled theories from others? Was he the generator of the present sense of individuality or did he contaminate humanity’s moral values with selfcenteredness? With debate from world-renowned Freud experts and philosophers, and animation, humour, art and music, More Alive than Dead explores the multifaceted Freudian influence on our culture and society.

There are 36 days left before Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. On another Baptism of Christ holiday an ice hole was made in a pond in a bedroom suburb of Kyiv. Church bells are heard on the shore, people are undressing, standing in line... In this short observational film, closeups of people of different ages, lines of naked bodies and short conversations tell us about the fragility of life, the contradictions of human faith and the joy of existence.

Another rigging of the presidential election in Belarus in 2020 led to massive civil resistance which the country had never experienced before. Brutal suppression of the peaceful protests resulted in more massive marches. Yet, the peaceful protests, having lasted for several months, did not achieve Alexander Lukashenko’s resignation from the president’s post he’s been holding for 27 years. Instead, political repressions in Belarus increased dramatically and became the largest in the history of Europe since the 1970s. The documentary focuses on the lives of Belarusian families who try to continue living and carry on despite being traumatised. Looking at their lives, we can see the pain and hope, feel the fear and determination of these people. An extraordinarily moving film from a Belarusian director living in Poland.

ABC Stage 67 is the umbrella title for a series of 26 weekly shows that included dramas, variety shows, documentaries, and original musicals. It premiered on American Broadcasting Company on September 14, 1966 with Murray Schisgal's The Love Song of Barney Kempinksi, directed by Stanley Prager and starring Alan Arkin as a man enjoying the sights and sounds of New York City in his last remaining hours of bachelorhood. Arkin was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Performance By An Actor in a Leading Role in a Drama and the program was nominated as Outstanding Dramatic Program. Future programs included appearances by Petula Clark, Bobby Darin, Sir Laurence Olivier, Albert Finney, Peter Sellers, David Frost, and Jack Paar. ABC's effort to bring culture to the masses was a noble but unsuccessful experiment. Scheduled first against I Spy on Wednesdays and then The Dean Martin Show on Thursdays, the show consistently received low ratings. Its last production, an adaptation of Jean Cocteau's one-woman play The Human Voice starring Ingrid Bergman, aired on May 4, 1967. "Stage 67" was not actually a part of the primary ABC facilities in Los Angeles. It was produced at the old Monogram Studios backlot that was later sold to KCET.
